Greenhouse Gases, Global Warming and the Impact of CO2
What are greenhouse gases?
Greenhouse gases are the gases present in the earth’s atmosphere (such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, ozone and methane) which regulate our climate by trapping heat and holding it in a kind of warm-air blanket that surrounds the planet. The warming of the earth as a result of this ‘atmospheric blanket’ is what scientists call the greenhouse effect.
Greenhouse gases are essential to maintaining the temperature of the Earth; without them the planet would be far too cold to sustain our current ecosystem. However, an excess of greenhouse gases can raise the temperature of the planet, enhancing the greenhouse effect and causing global warming.
How Do Humans Contribute to the Greenhouse Effect?
While the greenhouse effect is an essential environmental prerequisite for life on Earth, as more people use fossil fuels for heat, transportation and manufacturing, the level of greenhouse gases continues to increase. These increases, coupled with the issue of deforestation, help to explain why atmospheric concentrations of CO2 have increased by 31% since the beginning of the industrial revolution.
Impact on Our Environment
As human behavior expels more greenhouse gases, more heat becomes trapped and held within our atmosphere, gradually increasing the temperature of the Earth’s surface. Increasing global temperatures are expected to cause rising sea levels, increases in the intensity of extreme weather events, and significant changes to the amount and pattern of precipitation. If CO2 and other greenhouse gas levels continue to rise sharply in the future as scientists predict, other expected effects include lower agricultural yields, changes in ocean currents affecting trade routes, receding glaciers, and species extinctions.
